Month-End Close Checklist for Small Businesses

Why a Consistent Close Process Matters

A reliable month-end close turns messy bookkeeping into trustworthy financial reports. Without a repeatable process, entries get missed, balances drift, and the numbers you rely on stop reflecting reality.

Consistency also matters for timing. When the close follows the same steps every month, it takes less time, produces fewer surprises, and gives you confidence when you review your results.

Reconcile All Bank and Credit Card Accounts

Start by reconciling every bank, credit card, loan, and payment processor account to the penny. Confirm that opening balances match the prior month and investigate any transaction you do not recognize.

Reconciliation is the safety net for your entire close. If the bank does not match your books, nothing else you review that month is fully reliable.

Review Accounts Receivable and Payable

Run an accounts receivable aging report and follow up on anything past due. Then review accounts payable to confirm every bill you owe is recorded, so your expenses are not understated.

Recording bills as they arrive — not just when they are paid — keeps your profit picture accurate and prevents large expenses from landing in the wrong month.

Record Adjusting Entries

Month-end is the time to record depreciation, prepaid expenses, accrued payroll, and any other adjustments that keep your financials aligned with reality. These entries are easy to skip but make a meaningful difference to the accuracy of your reports.

Your Month-End Close Checklist

Use this list as your working guide each month:

  • Reconcile all bank, credit card, and loan accounts
  • Review and record outstanding invoices and bills
  • Record payroll and any accrued liabilities
  • Post depreciation and prepaid expense adjustments
  • Review profit and loss against the prior month
  • Review the balance sheet for unusual balances
  • Save reports and lock the period
